What is a surgical technologist?
A surgical technologist is a member of the operating room team. They help prepare for an operation by opening the instruments and organizing them and the room. They clean and dress themselves and then help the operating team put on their gowns and gloves. During the operation, surgical technologists are the ones who pass the instruments to surgeons, count the supplies used, care for specimens taken for the lab to do tests on, and help put bandages on the patient's incisions. After the surgery, they clean and restock the operating room.
Where does a surgical technologist work?
Surgical technologists may be found in hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, dentist's offices, and surgery centers.
What type of education is needed?
Approved programs lasting 9 to 24 months, which lead to a certificate, diploma, or an associate's degree, may be found in a community college, vocational school, hospital, or in the military. Being certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required as well.

A surgical technologist's average salary in Vermont is $38,006.
