What is a medical lab technician?

Medical lab technicians perform lab testing that helps to find, diagnose and treat disease. They prepare specimens for study and use different pieces of equipment to analyze these specimens, such as a microscope or a centrifuge. They also perform tests on blood, tissue and other body substances. Medical lab technicians may work in many areas of the lab or they may specialize in one area, such as histology (the study of cells and tissues) or cytogenetics (the study of chromosomes).

Where does a medical lab technician work?

Medical lab technicians may work in a clinic, a hospital, a doctor's office, a research center or a medical school.

What type of education is needed?

A bachelor's degree is preferred. However, an associate's degree from an approved college program, or a certificate from a hospital training program, vocational school, technical school or from the armed forces, are also options. A national exam is required as well.

What is the salary?

A medical lab technician's average salary in Vermont is $35,977.

How could a medical lab technician advance?

A medical lab technician could pursue further training and specialize in a specific area within the lab. With experience they could also become a manager of the lab.
