What is a health sciences librarian?

Health science librarians help doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals research the latest medical information that is needed so that these professionals can properly diagnose and treat their patients. Health science librarians may hold workshops, training sessions or work one-on-one with health care professionals to teach them how to do research. Another important part of their job is to help the public find reliable information about health problems.

Where does a health science librarian work?

A lot of their time is spent on a computer. They can work in many different places such as a college, public library, government agency, hospital, or research center.

What type of education is needed?

A master's degree is required from an American Library Association approved program. (A bachelor's degree in a field such as biology, chemistry, nursing, health sciences, computer science, or education would be helpful, but is not necessary).

Salaries vary, depending on where a health science librarian works. The average salary in Vermont is $40,080.

How could a health science librarian advance?

Options for advancement include becoming a director of a medical library, a chief information officer of a hospital or research center, or being an instructor at a library school.
