Health Careers:
Emergency Medical Technician

What is an emergency medical technician?

Emergency medical technicians, also known as EMT's, are the first to see and evaluate a medical problem at an emergency scene. They figure out the types and seriousness of injuries a person has, stabilize the patient and then get them to a hospital. They work at a fast pace in many stressful situations. EMT's often work without set working hours and for long periods of time. They travel in an ambulance to get to the scene of an emergency and must work in all weather conditions.

Where does an EMT work?

An EMT works for Emergency Medical Services, fire departments, hospitals, or private ambulance companies.

What type of education is needed?

There are different levels of EMT's, each requiring different levels of training. The requirements for training vary by state. To become a basic EMT, an associate's degree or a specific EMT training course offered within the community and a certification exam may need to be taken.

What is the salary?

An EMT's average salary in Vermont is $26,478.

How could an EMT advance?

An EMT can pursue further training to advance and become an intermediate level EMT, an advanced level (otherwise known as a paramedic), an instructor, or return to school to become a physician's assistant.
