A dental hygienist works with a dentist to help patients keep and
improve the health of their mouth. Hygienists teach patients about diseases of the mouth and how to prevent and treat them. They work with the patient during a visit. They examine the mouth and teeth, clean the teeth, apply fluoride and take x-rays. They work under and report to a dentist.

A dental hygienist may work in a private dental office, in public health or in a school.
What type of education is needed?
Associate's or bachelor's degree programs are available. Passing a licensing exam is also required.
