What is a dental hygienist?
A dental hygienist works with a dentist to help patients keep and 
improve the health of their mouth. Hygienists teach patients about diseases of the mouth and how to prevent and treat them. They work with the patient during a visit. They examine the mouth and teeth, clean the teeth, apply fluoride and take x-rays. They work under and report to a dentist.
Where does a dental hygienist work?
A dental hygienist may work in a private dental office, in public health or in a school.
What type of education is needed?
Associate's or bachelor's degree programs are available. Passing a licensing exam is also required.
What is the salary?
A dental hygienist's average salary in Vermont is about $51,320.
How could a dental hygienist advance?
Master's degree programs are available for those who would like to teach, or conduct research.
